The school playground is supervised from
7:45 to 7:55 a.m. Please do not drop off
or send your child to school to arrive
earlier than this time.
The school playground is supervised at
recess by school staff and at lunch time
by lunch program supervisors. Students
not registered in lunch program must not
arrive prior to 12:25 p.m.
For safety and security reasons, parents
are not permitted in the school
playground areas.
Parents are asked to stand away from
playground gate areas in order to help
the safe flow of students in and out of
the area.
Parents are asked to leave the school
property once they have delivered their
child to the school yard.
Parents are asked to call the school office
prior to 7:45 a.m. if their child will be absent
for the morning, the afternoon or the whole day.
An answering machine is available to take
messages.
For safety and security reasons, the secretary
will call the parents of any child who is absent
without notification.
Please help us avoid unnecessary calls by
advising the school before school begins if your
child will be absent.
Regular attendance at school is an essential
part of a child’s progress and development.
Lengthy absences create gaps in learning.
When scheduling a holiday, it is strongly
recommended that it be scheduled during the
holiday periods on our school calendar.
Since meaningful learning is built upon the
day-to-day classroom activities, it is not
possible for the teacher to provide a “homework
package” over an extended vacation from school.
Please give school your priority when planning a
holiday during the regular school calendar.
Students who are away on holidays during regular
school days are expected to read, write a
journal and be prepared to do a presentation on
their experience upon their return.
Students are responsible to catch up on concepts
taught during vacations taken during regular
school days.
Medical and dental appointments should be
scheduled during pedagogical days. The schedule
of these days is provided at the beginning of
the year on the
School Calendar.
Arriving on time is an important life skill.
We need your help in teaching your child the
importance and value of being on time.
Tardiness causes disruptions to the class
and confusion for the child who arrives
after class has begun and instructions have
been given.
We ask that parents help their children get
their day off to a good start by ensuring
they arrive at school on time.
Students are expected to be
in the school yard by 7:53 a.m.
and
12:28 p.m.
Students arriving late must report
to the office, sign in, and pick up
their absence card AND LATE SLIP.
For late students in Kindergarten or
cycle 1 (grades 1 & 2), parents must
come to the office to sign their
child in.
A LATE SLIP WILL BE ISSUED
for any student arriving after
7:55 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.
Three late slips in one month will
result in a detention. Three late
slips in one week will result in
missing morning and lunch recess on
the last day of that week.
Parents are to advise the school
ahead of time in writing if their
child must leave early for any
reason.
Please use the communication section
of your child’s agenda book and
advise your child to show the note
to their teacher and/or the daycare
coordinator first thing in the
morning.
Students leaving school early are to
meet their parents in the front
office.
Parents picking up their child must
sign them out at the school office.
Any changes to the daycare schedule must be
submitted in writing to the Daycare coordinator,
Mrs. Patsy Major, ahead of time.
Students will
not be allowed
to take the
bus or walk home instead of going to Daycare
without prior written permission from the parent.
Although Margaret Manson
Elementary School does not have a school uniform,
students are required to dress in a manner that reflects
school as a place of learning.
T-shirt, shorts or jogging/sportswear pants, and
running shoes (that do not mark the floor)
must be worn for gym, dance & health class.
Physical Education uniform colours are navy,
black and white. Parents may purchase at a store
of their choice, however the school will be
sending home order forms for T-shirts and other
sportswear with and without the school LOGO at
the beginning of the school year.
Students in grades 3 to 6 participating in
intramural activities and school board sport
events are asked to wear the School T-shirt with
our Logo to these events.
While we recognize the rights of parents and
children to express themselves through their
clothing or hair styles, we must reserve the
right to have the final say regarding the
appropriateness of any clothing or hair style
worn to school. While at school it is expected
that students will dress neatly and modestly.
Students are expected to wear clean,
appropriate clothing that is in good repair.
All clothing and accessories must be free
from anything that promotes: violence/gangs,
profanity, drugs, alcohol, and sex. (No
inappropriate graphics or language is
permitted.)
Shirts/Tops
must cover the torso completely and meet with
the accompanying skirt or pant. Shoulders should
be covered and size must be appropriate (not
provocatively tight). Oversized t-shirts
will be on loan from the office as needed.
Shorts and skirts need to be modest
(mid-thigh or longer)
Pants are to be worn at waist level. Pants
should not be provocatively tight or display
inappropriate writing.
Shoes must
be worn at ALL TIMES.
Two pairs of footwear are required at all
times; one for indoor and one for outdoor.
Indoor running shoes may also be worn to the
gym. Boots become the second pair of
footwear in the winter or on rainy days.
Kindergarten students must wear
Velcro tying shoes.
Sandals with sturdy straps may be worn, but
no “flip flop” type sandals (for safety
reasons when running or in case of
evacuation)
Parents are responsible to monitor weather
conditions and make sure their children are
dressed appropriately for the changing
weather conditions. Students are outside
every day for a considerable length of time
at recess and lunch time except in
exceptional weather conditions (rain or
extreme cold).
Hats, bandannas, head scarves and visors
must be removed when entering the school.
Hair is to be kept clean and must not
restrict a child’s vision or actions. Bangs
should be kept short and long hair should be
tied; this applies to boys as well as girls.
(These measures also help to reduce the
contracting and spreading of head lice).
Students are not to wear make-up to school.
While we recognize the right of students to
wear clothing accessories, we urge parents
and students to keep valuables at home as we
cannot be responsible for their loss or
theft.
Chains and loose jewelry must be removed for
gym and dance class.
Heavy chains
are not permitted at any time for safety
reasons.
All clothing and personal items
(jackets, snow pants, shoes, boots, gloves,
lunch box, school bag, etc.)must be
labeled with your child’s name.
The
school is not responsible for lost or stolen
items.
Students and parents are expected to check
the lost and found area when items are put
on display. Unclaimed items are given to the
needy on a periodic basis.
Please be advised that staff members of the
school are not permitted to administer any
medication to your child without written
permission from you and your physician.
This protocol must be followed if your child is
to take any medication regularly or on an
occasional basis during the school day.
All medication must be kept in the school
office. Students may never have medication
in their school bag, lunch box, desk, or on
them. Your child should not be entrusted or
instructed to carry and self-administer
medication. There is always the danger that
other children will access this medication.
All medication must be clearly marked (name,
drug name, dosage, doctor etc.) for storage in
the locked medical cabinet in the office.
Medical forms must be completed prior to the
administration of any medication. Parents may
get these forms from the school office and are
requested to complete and return the forms to
the office along with the child’s clearly
identified medication.
Medic-Alert bracelets should be worn by students
with life threatening conditions.
EpiPens and
inhalers are normally kept in the office unless
the child’s physician has instructed your child
to wear it in a pouch on their body at all
times. In this case it is recommended to have a
second one in the office.
Children with severe allergies should be
educated about their condition and told never to
eat foods of other children.
Given the many students and staff with severe
peanut and nut allergies, these products and
related products such as coconut oil should
never be sent to school or used in baked goods
sent to school.
Baked goods from Tim Hortons should never
be sent to school since they have clearly stated
that they cannot guarantee that their products
have not come into contact with peanuts and nuts
used in many of their products.
Please check with all distributors for their
peanut/nut free guarantee prior to purchasing
items to be sent to school.
The school nurse helps coordinate a list of
students with allergies and severe medical
conditions at the beginning of every school
year. Please make sure to complete the emergency
information and medical information forms given
out in our opening package and return them to
your child’s teacher immediately.
A
list of students with severe medical conditions
is posted in every room along with a picture of
the child.
School, Daycare and lunch program staff are
instructed how to administer an EpiPen.
There are staff members with certified first-aid
training.
Good nutrition is an important component of the
well-being of our students.
Please provide nutritional snacks and lunches
that include protein, fruit, vegetables, real
fruit juices, grain products, milk products.
No
junk food should be brought to school: candy,
chocolate bars, soft drinks, chips…are
forbidden.
Gum chewing is not permitted in school.
Only nutritional
snacks will be permitted at morning recess:
cheese & crackers, fresh fruit (no fruit
roll-ups or similar sugar based products), real
fruit juice, vegetables & dip, yogurt,
nutritional muffins or baked goods (this is to
avoid the negative effect of sugar laced
products on an empty stomach which causes a
short lived sugar spike followed by a dramatic
drop in energy and ability to concentrate).
The occasional
baked good is permitted for dessert after lunch
(cookie, cake, cupcake).
Water is an
important component to helping one focus and
concentrate on their work.
Water bottles are
permitted in class as long as the students use
them appropriately.
Watch for the
school board’s Nutrition Newsletters that come
home on a regular basis.

We
request that your child remain at home if s/he
is not well. We do not have an on-site nurse on
a regular basis nor are we equipped to look
after sick students.
Children who are not in good health cannot enjoy
a productive day at school and risk passing on
their illness to others. Please consider others!
Parents will be called to pick up their child if
s/he comes to school sick.
All students are required to go outside at
recess, lunch and during Daycare. If a child is
too sick to go outside, then s/he is too sick to
be at school.
When the
weather calls upon us to shut down the service, it is
usually done prior to 6:30 am. As of 5:00 a.m. on these
days, officials at the school board discuss road
conditions with carriers and speak with Environment
Canada about the impending weather. The Director General
of the Lester B. Pearson School Board makes the final
decision.
Once the
decision is made, the following medias are contacted and
the appropriate message broadcasted:
